The best time to go to the Maldives on a surf trip is between March & October with June, July and August predominantly getting the biggest swells to go with the offshore tradewinds at that time. There are over 50 breaks scattered through out the North, Central and Southern atolls offering some great variety for all levels of surfer. Although the Maldives are exposed to the same swells as Indonesia its higher latitude and South-East exposure make it a less hardcore surfing environment.
The smallest Asian nation in both size and population, Maldives is actually formed from a double chain of twenty-six atolls. It is roughly 435 miles (or 700 kilometers) from the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, and is actually set within the Laccadive Sea region of the Indian Ocean. Interestingly enough, the country is the “lowest” on the planet due to the average ground level height being only 4’ 11” above sea level. The highest point of land throughout the entire nation stands at only 7’ 7” in height above sea level as well.
