I personally have been captaining surf charter boats in Indonesia, mainly Sumatra since the 90’s and traveling Indo since 88′. I used to be the captain of Mentawai boats Serene Dream, Strictly Business and Barrenjoey. On Serene Dream we used to do trips in the off season from Bali to Lombok and I have surfed Lombok and Sumbawa by land since the late 80’s. The crew are very experienced having done 10 years all over Indonesia. The captain is very experienced and has great local knowledge along with the Balinese surf guide. Being a surfer myself i’m very keen to find the uncrowded spots, as I too don’t like crowds. I am an Australian qualified captain and safety is well observed and paramount on my boat. I have also been a volunteer for Surf Aid in the past for the tsunami relief’s in 2004 and 2005.
What set’s Mikumba apart is the comfort that guests get for the price compared to the other boats, we have 6 air conditioned cabins (two are doubles with bathroom) and dining room. The galley is separate from the dining room, which is a big plus, and we have Al fresco dining on the top deck. This boat is huge (22 meters) with plenty of areas to relax in. There is a swim/dive platform on the stern for easy access to the dingy.
The surf throughout these Indonesian islands is nothing short of amazing. There are waves to suit all levels of surfer and paddler. The waves are typically reef breaks with the odd beach break and an assortment of world class left and rights. The water temp hovers around the 27 degree mark year round making it comfortable in board shorts all year.
